The first 72 hours

Land, clear immigration, and ignore the unofficial helpers between the baggage hall and the exit. The prepaid taxi desk is inside the airport, before the public pavement. Ask for the receipt and the destination written on it. A hotel transfer arranged by the hotel is fine. A stranger at the kerb who “knows a better price” is how the first argument of the holiday starts. Fares move when the official table moves — the taxi page is the place we keep that, not a number invented on this homepage.

Eat before you book three tours. Dholl puri is the street breakfast: a thin split-pea flatbread folded around bean curry, rougaille and chutney. Gâteau piment is the chilli fritter sold in the morning. Neither belongs on a resort buffet as the main event. The food guide names the dishes and what they are. Stall names change. The method does not: queue where the office workers queue, and leave a market when the trays look tired.

One boat day and one inland morning is enough for the first three days. West of the island is the usual lee for a lagoon when the trades are up. Île aux Cerfs is the east-coast sandbar people mean when they say “the island trip”; do not let a package force a bad lunch on you. The laws that surprise visitors are ordinary and strict: drugs are not a holiday exception, driving is on the left, and the police do not treat “I didn’t know” as a plan.
